2027 Conference & Reunion Planning Committee

Honoring Our Ancestors • Strengthening Our Families • Building Our Future

About the Project

The Stagville Descendants Council is seeking volunteers to help plan the 2027 Stagville Descendants Conference & Reunion, scheduled for June 25–27, 2027.

 

As the Council's premier gathering, the conference brings descendants, families, and community members together to celebrate our shared history while advancing preservation, genealogy, education, economic empowerment, youth leadership, and community engagement. Planning begins well in advance, and we're looking for committed volunteers to help shape a meaningful and memorable experience.

 

The planning committee will begin meeting virtually via Zoom in early August 2026.

 

Descendant Representatives

We're seeking six descendant representatives who reflect the diversity of our community across families and generations. Recommended representation includes:

• 2 Elders
• 2 Adults (ages 30–55)
• 1 Young Adult (ages 18–29)
• 1 Youth Representative (ages 16–18)

 

Broad representation helps ensure the conference reflects the voices, perspectives, and priorities of descendants across generations while supporting future leadership within the Council.

Children's Educational Coloring & Activity Book

"Growing our Roots: The Story of Stagville Through the Eyes of It's Descendants"

About the Project

Help create an educational coloring and activity book that introduces children to the history of Stagville through the voices, stories, and lived experiences of its descendants. Designed for young descendants, families, schools, and community members, the book will combine engaging activities with historical storytelling to inspire curiosity, strengthen family connections, celebrate cultural identity, encourage literacy and genealogy, and help preserve the legacy of Stagville for future generations.

 

We're seeking volunteers with a variety of skills and interests (see below) to join the project team as we begin developing this resource for publication in 2027.  The committee will begin meeting virtually via Google Meet in early August 2026.

 

Recommended Ages for the Book: 5 to 14

Project Volunteer Opportunities

We're looking for passionate volunteers to help bring Growing Our Roots: The Story of Stagville Through the Eyes of Its Descendants to life. Whether you have professional expertise or simply want to help preserve and share our history, we'd love to hear from you.

Children's & Youth Coordinator (Chair) (1 position): Provide overall leadership for the project by coordinating meetings, managing the timeline, and guiding the book from concept to completion.

 

Historical Research Representative (1 position): Help ensure the historical accuracy of the book by reviewing content, photographs, and other historical materials.

 

Education & Curriculum Specialist (1 position): Advise on age-appropriate learning activities and help create engaging educational content for children.

 

Artist / Illustrator (1 position): Create original illustrations, coloring pages, and other artwork that brings Stagville's history to life for young learners.

Graphic Designer / Layout Editor (1 position): Design the book's layout, prepare artwork and text for print, and ensure a polished final publication.

 

Communications & Marketing Representative (1 position): Help share the project with the community, promote the finished book, and support outreach and distribution efforts.

 

Descendant Parent or Grandparent Representative (1 position): Provide feedback to ensure the book resonates with families and reflects the experiences and perspectives of descendants.

 

Youth Representatives (Ages 12–18) (2 positions): Share ideas, test activities, and help ensure the book is engaging, fun, and meaningful for young readers.
